Tucked away on the corner of Pin Oak and Highway 90 in Old Katy is a hidden treasure. Though it is practically unnoticeable to passers-by and located inside the Texas Premier Bank Building, Amber's Designs is a place that has been catering not only to locals but to people across the country for the past four and one half years.

Amber's Designs is essentially Amber Gustafson, a master jeweler and bench jeweler who both designs and sells the jewelry in her store. Her motto is: Where the Jeweler is the Owner. "There isn't really anyone in this town who is both the bench jeweler and the owner," she says. Gustafson made, designed, and sold jewelry for many years while working for several different stores in the Houston area before coming to Katy and opening her own store. What makes her unique is that she can sit down with a customer and size a ring or repair a chain, which is the kind of service and true craftsmanship that keeps her customers coming back. It is evident that she loves what she does and is passionate about it. After all, that's what got her into jewelry in the first place. "Passion got me into jewelry. I love it," she says. While running her busy store, Gustafson still finds time to make the unique, custom pieces of jewelry that her customers are looking for. And when you step into Amber's Designs, you'll see that the pieces lining her display cases are all unique. "I do everything from start to finish including wax carving, setting diamonds, casting, and hand fabrication," she says. You'll get personalized attention when you visit Amber's Designs and it will be a rare occasion when you ask her for something that she doesn't have on hand. "As small as my shop is, if someone asks for something, I probably have it. You can't do that in most stores. I'm passionate about colored stones and different kinds of stones," Gustafson says. Her loyal customer base includes Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top and she typically sends her jewelry all over the country. Most of the customers who visit her store are return customers or those who have heard of her from someone else. "I'm definitely a destination spot," she says. "People don't generally come in just to look." To survive for the past four years inside a bank building with no signage is indeed a testament to her success. Gustafson has won many awards for her work and serves on the board of the Texas Jeweler's Association. She is currently the only female on the board. She was honored to be asked to serve on the board after starting out years ago attending their conventions while working for other jewelers. When she broke away as a bench jeweler to open her own store, she joined the association as a member which was followed by a request to serve on the board. She is now in charge of their design contests and is looking to push the level of the competition even higher to encourage participation from other artists. She is also a proud member of the Women's Jewelers Association, Katy Business Association and a member of the Katy Sunrise Rotary Club. After four years, Gustafson is looking to expand her store. She currently has too much inventory to display in her cases. Look for her to have even more to offer in the coming year.
